So, this week was a change of pace. We took the ferry from Palma to Ibiza with the sole aim of partying the Club scene for four days, or at least for as long as our bodies held out. Seems a bit of a strange thing to do for a couple of middle-aged people but having been married with children at 20, one of us hadn’t even been to a festival until their 40’s. As such, it was a chance to see what all the fuss was about before we didn’t have the energy or the will to do it. And what was it like…………..it was awesome!!!!!!! Having said that I don’t think we will be coming back. As we are discovering, this trip is really shining a light on our own hypocrisy. We both claim to care for the environment and are concerned about wealth disparity but we just keep seeing it at every turn and worse, we are both highlighting and contributing to it. Ibiza is a rip-off, with a vast amount of money being pulled from mostly young people’s wallets into the hands of those with huge yachts bobbing in the Mediterranean. Arguably €100 to see a headline act at a top club can be justified but €18 for a bottle of water ??? We do love however that the kids have discovered they can buy one bottle of water and then refill it in the toilets, where there’s a will there’s a way.

All the above notwithstanding, the partying here is incredible and the energy electric but even for two people who certainly know how to burn the candle at both ends, four days has done us. We started the trip in one of the world’s top clubs, Ushuaia. To make it even better Davis Guetta was the headline act and he didn’t disappoint. It was touted as a “day party”, which apparently is what you call it if it ends before midnight. Starting at 5pm and obviously being a pair rather green duffers we got there at that time ……it was going to be a long night. However, what getting there early meant was that we could really get a sense of the energy continuing to build hour by hour, until, when Guetta came to the decks everyone just went dance crazy, including the uncoordinated lanky bloke and the menopausal hot flush lady.
Not feeling we could justify too many rounds at over €40 we avoided getting too drunk and so woke the next day feeling pretty good and ready to do it all again. Next we thought we’d sample a “pool party” and discovered that at Ibiza Rocks it had as its main act Craig David. Having checked the dress code (swim outfits) we duly went along to see what these events entailed. It was a lot more intimate than Ushuaia, as it was literally based around a hotel pool with perhaps only a thousand or so people. In a rush of blood to the head and with, so he maintains, concerns about Fran being out in the heat, Stuart paid for access to the VIP area. This is the biggest nonsense of the hole Ibiza scene but it made the whole day one of the best experiences of our lives. We had access to our own area of the pool to cool down and a man that wanted to keep plying us with copious amounts of alcohol for free. Despite it being a pool party, the bouncers did have to have words with Fran for splashing people as she got more and more excitable. Seemed an odd thing to berate people about during a pool party in 34C of heat but there you go.
On the third night we went looking for a dance club that was a bit more authentic in Ibiza Port area but to be honest didn’t really find it. However, this area is really beautiful with narrow cobbled streets full of restaurants, bars, festoon lights and energy. We spent a couple of hours talking to random people before finally heading to a late club called “Swag”. We thought we should at least try to do a proper club and despite leaving at 04:00 we were a bit underwhelmed. Maybe we had become a bit jaded and energy levels were running low. More likely not knowing all the German techno tracks and being surrounded by Germans who was the problem. Stuart had suggested this venue and very surprised when it wasn’t reggae.
So that was our Ibiza experience the next night we just chilled and watched the world rotate around us. Next stop Morocco for detox and self-care.
